GO Mission Trip [part 2]

When we first arrived there was so much excitement surrounding the trip. We knew that God was ready to allow us to be a part of an amazing weekend.

When we got up on Saturday morning we headed over to The Salvation Army to serve. Because of the amount of students we have with us, we needed to break the group into 2 separate groups. The first group spent the morning painting the walls in the Social Services dining room. Social Services is able to feed hundreds of people, who may otherwise go without, each day. Being able to paint the dining room meant that the room would be more welcoming and inviting to the people that came through the doors.

The second group spent the morning in the Salvation Army Thrift Store. The students were able to help sort through donations and clean up many storage areas (including a shed and attic that have not been cleaned and organized in years). The thrift store is able to help provide families and people with clothes and household supplies at a discounted price.

After lunch the students were able to switch areas and finish painting and sorting. The students were able to make a huge impact on the people that work at The Salvation Army, and allowing them to serve God in a more effective way. Students will never be able to see the people that they were helping, but they were able to show them the love of Christ in a tangible way.

Sunday morning we enjoyed the Middle School church service here at The Heights Church. Pastor John spoke the the students about making the decision to follow Christ “real” in their lives. He challenged them to stop going through the motions of the Christian life, and to live each day sold out for Christ.

Before service began, the worship leader for the middle school service was practicing while we ate breakfast. When we finished, he thought it would be fun to play songs and have the students sing them. He began taking requests, and students all began shouting their favorite worship songs. He ended up playing a few of the songs, and having students sing with him. The students really enjoyed this time before service began.

After service we headed to a local park for lunch and a big game of kickball before serving with Church on the Street.

The students went into feeding the homeless with a fearless passion for Christ. They all were eager to pass out blankets and talk with the men and women. It is surely to be a memory that students will not soon forget.

It is currently 36 degrees outside and we are looking at some rain/snow overnight and in the morning. Be praying for us, as we prepare to wrap up the trip and head home tomorrow.

Below is a short video that highlights some of the weekends activities.
